Article Title: Here at Horizons

Just this evening I talked by phone with Ali White who is the new half-time program coordinator at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

White reminded me of the library's mission: to be a "catalyst for the free exchange of ideas." It turns out there's a great "free-exchange-of-ideas" tradition at Kellogg-Hubbard. In what is something of a state record, during her tenure former Head Librarian Janet Nielsen wrote no fewer than 17 successful book discussion grant proposals to the Vermont Council on the Humanities.

Ali White appears quite happy to tramp along in Janet Nielsen's footsteps.

On Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at 12 noon, Irish poet Greg Delanty will visit the library and read from his work. Delanty was the 1999 winner of Britain's National Poetry Award.

On Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. Dartmouth neurologist and space shuttle astronaut Dr. Jay Buckey will appear at Kellogg-Hubbard and talk about medical research in space.

White said there's a fresh surge of energy at the library. She mentioned the new Douglas Hayes program room made possible by the library's recent expansion and renovation project. She also mentioned her delight in working with Hilari Farrington, the library's new director.

In the coming months, look for these program events -- and they are just a sampling of everything that's coming up: a computer instruction series for anyone who wants to learn about computers; a Mother's Day tea in May; a talk by Ken Squires of Radio Vermont and Thunder Road about auto racing; and a noontime concert and theater series this fall.

Toward the end of our phone conversation, White talked about the pleasure she was experiencing in working at the library in general and with Hilari Farrington in particular. She said, "We are having a blast. We are!" In case I might have missed her point, she said again, emphatically, "We are having a blast!"
