Article Title: Here at Horizons

Edition: August 2001
Category: Horizons
Author: Edie Black Zfass
Article:

Three months into the launch of Horizons and we're beginning to get our sea legs. We're cheerful around the office because of the overwhelmingly positive reception Horizons has received. One whose opinion we value offered that Horizons is "elegant," while others have enjoyed the "interesting mix" of articles. We're proud of our two monthly columns. Dave Keller has the refreshing gift of seeing "specialness" in the seemingly insignificant and creating images that take you right into his experience. Mich Kabay keeps us abreast and alert to the hazards of the new Internet technology with which we all wrestle. While the Internet provides endless possibilities for education in all spheres, it also requires us to educate ourselves to some real dangers out there. There's no one more equipped to help us with that than Mich. The talented Brett Campbell, a Montpelier boy, reminisces about seeing Planet of the Apes with his dad and underlines the poignancy with his line drawing.

Catherine Broucek Orr responds to my questions, allowing us a glimpse into the life of an orchestra conductor, and our inimitable Nat Frothingham talks with the director of Adamant's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ben Strand and I munch on "The Perfect Salad" and Walter Carpenter's "Quirky Windows" is light hearted and fun.

So, we set our standards high and try to build on the strong foundation of The Bridge.

We know there's much work ahead to achieve our goals, while we struggle for balance in our presentations. Our goal is to have a theater, music and visual arts piece each month. While in the abstract this sounds reasonable, it can become complicated. The calendar is also hugely complicated, because there's such a profusion of events worthy of attention and we'd like to promote them all. We learned quickly that space and funds make this unfeasible. For the present time, therefore, we'll retain our focus as a guide to the arts and culture of central Vermont. We will remain flexible and adjust as we need to.

We encourage your feedback and hope you enjoy this community paper as much as we enjoy presenting it to you.
