Timothy Donovan, a Montpelier resident with a 25-year track record in the Vermont state college system was recently hired as the new president of Community College of Vermont (C.C.V.).

During a recent interview, Donovan returned time and time again to the notion of C.C.V.'s accessibility. It's clear he's committed to maintaining the school's reputation for being accessible.

C.C.V.'s tuition is the lowest in Vermont at $112 per credit. There are C.C.V. learning sites in obvious places like Burlington and Rutland, but also in more far-flung locations like Newport, Bennington and Saint Albans. About 90 percent of Vermont residents are within 25 miles of a C.C.V. Learning site.

Donovan sees C.C.V. as a pioneering school and he notes the institution has recently started offering a massage therapy course in Montpelier on weekends. He said C.C.V. continues to expand its on-line course offerings, and this fall will offer 70.

Donovan is also high on C.C.V.'s pioneering work in finding ways to assess the value of prior student learning. At C.C.V., it's possible for a student to identify a past learning experience, prove that the learning took place, and apply for academic credit to validate the worth of the experience.

Thirty years ago C.C.V. was founded as a small, experimental college with ten courses and 50 students. Today C.C.V. is the second largest college in Vermont with an annual enrollment of nearly 8,000 students. There are 12 learning sites, 650 instructors, the annual budget is $14.5 million, and C.C.V. had 358 students graduate in June 2001.
