A man and a woman who don't even live in Montpelier took first and second prize in the paper's "First Annual Montpelier History Trivia Challenge."

But wait a minute.

Dean Slack of Cornish, New York who took first prize was born and raised in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School (M.H.S.) in 1946. And Connie Frail Ho of Stowe, VT who took second prize was born and raised in Montpelier and graduated from M.H.S. In 1949.

Wait another minute.

It turns out that Connie Frail Ho knew Dean Slack's mother. They met when Ho was living in Montpelier and both women attended the Trinity Methodist Church.

Both prizewinners have fond memories of growing up in Montpelier. Slack said, "I have one complete section of my library at home on the history of Vermont and Montpelier." Slack's sister, Dorothy Mix, lives in East Montpelier and Slack likes to return to his old stomping grounds here at least five or six times a year.

Connie Frail Ho said Montpelier was "a great town to grow up in." She has fond memories of her high school years. Each fall on the night before the M.H.S. football team played Barre's Spaulding High School there was a snake dance down Main Street to State Street, followed by a pep rally and bonfire in front of the State House. She remembered that as a very big event.

In the late 40's when Connie was growing up in Montpelier there was a 9 p.m. curfew for teenagers 16 years old and under. You had to be home and off the streets by 9:00 p.m. One night Connie was heading home after 9:00 p.m. and was stopped by a police cruiser. The police told her, "We're going to make another round and if you're still out, we'll take you down to the station."

Connie scurried home. She didn't want to be taken to the station and have her parents called to come down and fetch her. That would have been very embarrassing. But she never forgot the experience.

Winners, enjoy your diners out at either Julio's or Sarducci's.
